Daily Prompt: Singular Sensation

If you could have a guarantee that one, specific person was reading your blog, who would you want that person to be? Why? What do you want to say to them?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us ONE.

There are so many people who I would love to read my blog. I have so many influences, and for different things too. For example, when I have written stories my biggest influences have been the fantasy giants – Tolkien, Le Guin, Gaiman and Pratchett are just some of these. Since I write on this blog, I suppose I would have to choose one of these people, however I think some mentions of my other influences in art and music composition would also be appropriate – you never know, I might choose one of them!

I have been composing music since I was eight years old, usually on a piano. The kinds of pieces I would write would often last no longer than three minutes, and would never be written down – all of it would be kept in my head. Growing up, I started to listen to some of the composer who today make up my favourites  – Debussy, Ravel, Mahler, Bach, Schubert and Prokofiev are a select few of these. All these people I would love to read my blog for sure, but for their sakes I’m not going to say I want one of these to be the one person who reads this blog – it wouldn’t be very interesting for them I don’t think.

Art-wise, René Lalique, Gaudi, Shaun Leane and Picasso are some of the artists whose work I adore. All of them are Art Nouveau-period onwards. Shaun Leane and René Lalique are/were both jewellery designers influenced by natural forms, even though their work differs greatly. Gaudi of course was the famous architect – Sagrada Familia is perhaps one of my favourite architectural designs in the world. I find Picasso’s Cubist work extremely interesting – the ‘broken mirror’ effect is one of my favourite ideas in art, and I’ve painted a lot using Cubist techniques. However, all of these people would also not be interested in my blog I don’t think.

Now, in true Spraffing style, who out of my extremely wacky and imaginative head would I have read this blog?

Five year old me? One of the characters in one of my stories or tales? I genuinely can’t decide – my blog seems so inferior to all the famous people, and it’s impossible for something that no longer exists or that has never existed to read it! Come on, think!

I’m going to have to say Sparrowhawk.

Archmage Ged, or Sparrowhawk as he is called most of the time, is more of a philosopher than a wizard – all he talks about throughout the books he belongs to (‘Tales from Earthsea’ by Le Guin) is ‘when it is right to use magic’, and ‘maintaining the balance of the world’. For me, out of the three wizards, he is the most wise. Indeed a wizard is a figure of power, but power

through intellect, through wisdom. Perhaps then Archmage Ged is also the most powerful. He is a character who has experienced more than the average person – death, fear, pain, redemption, companionship, power, imprisonment, exile, and he becomes all the wiser for it. He, like me, strives to experience as much as possible throughout his life, by travelling further than any man has done, travelling back from the world of Death, even facing and levelling with dragons (who in the books are pretty much omnipotent).

Sparrowhawk is one of the three wizards, all of which are very different and conjure different types of magic. These three wizards are Gandalf, Sparrowhawk, and Dumbledore. These three wizards are so different, yet so wonderful in all their own rights. All of them are wise, all of them would make me feel safe if I was to encounter them. Yet, I think Sparrowhawk would have to be the one to read my blog.

Daily Prompt: Progress

When you look back at your blog on January 2, 2015, what would you like to see?

Photographers, artists, poets: show us PROGRESS.

Since I am very new to blogging (barely a week into it), I went investigating other blogs to see how their own journeys are going for them personally and how their blogs have evolved over whatever length of time they may have been running. I have to say it was a mixed set of results; a few blogs have been up a year or more, with a few hundred followers, yet the writer seems unhappy with some aspects of the blog, whether that be the writing part of it (they aren’t satisfied with the quality of their work) or the public side of it (they are satisfied with the number of hits they are getting).

I enjoy waking up every morning now, even if it is just to do the same thing every day, because I love writing with a passion! There is nothing more pleasing to do after you’ve woken up and had a nice morning than to go to your decrepid laptop and type for an hour on a certain topic. It makes it even easier with the Daily Prompts to just sit, relax and write on the subject given. I think that there is quite a large number of people who find it hard to maintain a certain level of consistency of quality of writing because they perhaps have set themselves too-constricting guidelines to what they write.

It is almost a certainty that I am one of these people, however this blog is my escape from strict guidelines – the only thing I have in my head that I won’t write (and don’t particularly want to!) is anything to do with politics, because I a) don’t have an express opinion on a lot of political situations and b) because I don’t really want to develop one for the time being either. Sitting on the fence, for me, is not a bad thing in politics because as I see it I will cause less pain and trouble to people both sides of an argument if I do.

So this blog is my writing spa effectively. I feel for these bloggers who feel stressed or disappointed somewhat with their blogs. So I have decided to help anyone who feels that way in the near future with a bunch of tips for maintaining quality of writing as well as maintaining the enjoyment and near bliss of writing. However that feeling is what I dread today –  that a year along, 2nd January 2015, I might be feeling down about how I write or that I don’t get enough hits. So that’s what I’m going to show you Daily Prompt – that in one year’s time I will still be enjoying writing as much as I am today, and that I will enjoy it the same amount, if not more, all year!

Writing is one of my greatest passions, and has been for as long as I can remember. It started out as a young me writing stories based on video games his older brother used to play, and now it’s me writing a sci-fi novel on politics of the future…So basically, I don’t want to spoil what I have, because I have in the past and, in all truth, it was deeply saddening – something I definitely don’t want to happen again.

I don’t mind what happens regarding hits, I don’t mind what happens regarding quality (too much!), but I want to feel happy and uplifted by what I write! Regarding the past times, that would also be Progress.

The First (ever) Sonnet

She sits at piano stool and plays a piece,

A Chopin Waltz, a piece she holds so dear indeed,

She plays in light, she studies hard at night,

and sleeps at 12 until next day springs bright.

When everything around may seem so dull

to her, she keeps a smile upon her face and gives

a hug to those who at the time are sad.

What thing may she have learnt, so wonderful

indeed, that through all sadness she can live

quite bright, when all she wants is her “good lad”.

When quiet hours come round once more, at last

she cries: She thinks of loved ones in the past.

Though she be nice to all us – gentle, kind –

she misses those held dear she left behind.

Daily Prompt: A Brand New You, Effective Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the first day of a brand new year. Tomorrow you get to become anyone in the world that you wish. Who are you? You can choose to by anyone, alive today or someone gone long ago. If you decide to stay “you” share your rationale.

Photographers, artists, poets: show us METAMORPHOSIS.

This is the first time I’ve written a post using Daily Prompts, so please don’t go too harsh on me!

It’s true that I’m a man. It’s also true that I’m a man who likes to be himself, more than most realise. It may seem a little adventurous when it comes to writing about this idea, but it’s the pure and honest truth – I would rather face my own demons. I don’t think that everyone is born with a purpose in life – to be honest I don’t like the idea of destiny and fate, but I do think that everyone makes their own purpose in life, and through that we can live.

Life, for me anyway, is the process whereby we make mistakes and overcome them, and whereby we experience all aspects of the world. Therefore to live, you really have to go wandering. I remember watching Joss Whedon’s ‘Firefly’ and Inara saying, “…every problem is an opportunity in disguise.”, and I think that can be true in a lot of cases. What can you learn from what’s gone wrong? Firstly, you can probably learn how to prevent it from happening again. That’s automatically one point to you! One point to living a full life! I think that’s strangely beautiful.

Experiencing everything in the world first hand is invaluable as well. If you were someone else surely you would have all their memories and thoughts, and everything you are includes your experiences and thoughts. Perhaps it’s just such an alien idea to me, that I couldn’t imagine being anyone else. But if you run from your demons, I don’t think you’ll get anywhere either. I laugh at how much like myself I sound! However it is what you do that make you who you are I think.

Does that mean, then, that if you inherit the body of another that you then have the responsibility of sorting out and facing that person’s demons, perhaps even on top of your own? Perhaps, but leave your views and opinions up for discussion here!
