Daily Prompt: The Luckiest People

Who was the first person you encountered today? Write about him or her.

Photographers, artists, poets: show us PEOPLE.

The first person I encountered today was my dear friend Anna C, who is the singer in our band, and who I’ve known since primary school. She’s always been different, funky, stylish. Even in primary school she dressed in funky clothes outside of school. Singing is her passion. We were both choristers at the same time, although I started a year before her. In the unique environment of the cathedral where we practically grew up, we were trained in the tradition of a daily choral regime, singing services every night apart from Saturday. This was where Anna shined, singing increasingly more solos towards the end of her chorister career, and under the instruction of both the choir master and her singing teacher her voice gradually developed into what it is today.

I have always been the youngest of my peer group, and Anna is only a couple of months older than I, so there has been that connection to an extent as well. We were the two Deputy Head Choristers in our final year as choristers, however my voice had broken quite suddenly in the summer before term started and, at age 12, was the youngest bass in the choir…

It was actually quite hilarious, but because we both have had the vocal training we enjoyed singing together in private with our other friends. I’ve never really been into singing since my voice broke, because after your voice broke in the choir we were a part of, you are more or less discarded and get absolutely no training in your new vocal range, something I didn’t appreciate at the time. I sing sometimes to myself, especially our band’s own songs, and because I have a kind of trans-Atlantic accent thing going from watching far too much American TV throughout my life, I think I sound like Anna (she’s not American, but does have a similar accent to mine, although I do sometimes go quite Scottish depending on what I’m talking about).

Anna is a massive Noel Fielding fan, and dresses up in funky costumes like him (not quite to the same extent but wacky all the same!). She got her hair cut like a lead singer in a band she likes, so she would look quite gothic if she dressed in all black and got some piercings. Despite being known in our peer group as someone who doesn’t go out with a lot of guys at all, she does get a large amount of male attention. It has to be said she is very good-looking and I remember several occasions (which she knows about now) in primary school and the early years of high school where I did have quite a bad crush on her!

So we have a lot of history, and we have such a laugh all the time. She is incredibly funny and I often ask her to do some kind of surreal or just plain hilarious stand-up at my birthday events – always a hit with our friends. If I didn’t know her I don’t think I would be half as jolly as I am today.

She has also influenced a lot of my life. An example of this is my taste in music. In primary school she was often teased for being different – whilst others listened to recent pop music, she would listen to bands like the Oasis and Metric, and big names like David Bowie. As a young kid from the countryside who had previously never been interested in anything other than games and could never remember celebrities, I took the chance to learn a bit about the music she listened to, and instantly fell in love with it. Now we are part of a band so we can create music of our own that we like, influenced by all the bands we listen to.

Anna is just a great and very talented person, and I don’t tell that to her enough. I have no idea what I’d do without her as she is one of my best friends, and has been for a long time. I will be seeing her tomorrow for recording another of our songs! Hopefully alternative-rock enduced mayhem will break out!
